A man will await his first court appearance from behind bars after he was accused of causing the death of a pregnant woman who fell out of a moving car in Melbourne.
Helena Broadbent, 32, passed away in hospital after delivering her baby – who is currently in a critical condition – via C-section on Saturday.
William Wilson, was charged on Sunday afternoon for driving dangerously, causing her death.
His case was heard in absentia at Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on Sunday night.
His lawyers have not applied for bail.
The 35-year-old was ordered to remain in custody before his first court appearance on Wednesday.
Helena’s loved ones paid tribute to her and the life she lived, with her devastated brother Paul Broadbent saying she was the “best sister anyone can have”.
“She was a beautiful, caring mum. She loved those two kids. And she was so looking forward to the new one on the way,” he told ABC.
“[I] just can’t believe it. That’s my baby sister – gone.
“Just a beautiful girl, gone way too early.”
Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty believes there was an “altercation” before her death.
“It’s alleged the altercation continued in a car the male was driving. The victim has fallen from the back seat onto the road as the car was driving around a corner,” she said.
