Channel Nine has put rumours to rest claiming that the hosts of the Today show are embroiled in a feud.
Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, a spokesperson from the network shut down a story that was published in Woman’s Day suggesting that Georgie Gardner, 48, and Deborah Knight, 46 may be on bad terms.
The allegations came after Knight posted a photo on her Instagram account, showing her sharing a drink with fellow newsreaders Erin Molan and Belinda Russell. According to the magazine, the absence of Gardner meant that the two don’t see eye-to-eye.
“Absolute garbage by Woman’s Day. Deb, Erin and Belinda read the weekend news together – this picture has nothing to do with Today,” said the spokesperson.
Knight shared the photos to her social media earlier this month, captioning it: “When you enjoy hanging with each other – why not catch up outside the work walls!!!…. Love you.” The three journalists looked carefree and relaxed as they pointed their glasses towards the camera. But despite the rumours being laid to rest, that doesn’t take away from the unfortunate dismal ratings the new-look Today show has been acheiving.
The breakfast show premiered in mid-January during the Australian Open, with a viewership of 197,000 compared to rival Sunrise’s 266,000.
The Daily Telegraph recently reported that executives at Nine are “genuinely concerned” about the future of the breakfast show, but a spokesperson for the network denied those claims.
“They had two things working for them – all the press and the noise of a relaunch,” an anonymous source told the newspaper.
“Also [Nine] expected a big curiosity factor with an all-new team. However, that didn’t materialise at all. In fact, it was DOA [dead on arrival].”
