Nothing beats sitting down to watch a movie with your family or friends.

But be warned, watching these particular movies might end up being pretty expensive. Not because they cost too much to hire or buy, but because they’ll have you so inspired to travel when finished you’ll feel compelled to buy a planet ticket!

Here’s a list containing our 10 favourite travel films of all time. These films will inspire a sense of adventure and have you looking forward to your next trip.

Set in Tokyo, Japan, this modern classic from Sophia Coppola is a captivating take on the universal travel experience of feeling ‘lost in translation’ overseas. Starring Bill Murray as a lonely, ageing movie star and Scarlett Johansson as a conflicted newlywed.

9. Thelma and Louise

This film redefined the great American road trip and encapsulates the sense of freedom that comes with being out on the open road. The film stars Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis as two friends who look to the road for a break from their dreary lives.

8. The Beach

This coming of age film inspired thousands of backpackers to seek the perfect beaches of South East Asia. Starring Leonardo Dicaprio, The Beach is a tale of a group of travellers seeking out a beautiful, hidden lagoon, untouched by the tourism industry.

7. Before Sunrise

One of the great cinema couples of the 90s is brought together in this dialogue-heavy cult classic that tells the tale of a chance meeting and romance between two fresh-faced travellers. Before Sunrise stars Ethan Hawke and the beautiful Julie Delpy.

6. The Rum Diary

Never before has the heady, sultry, filthy loveliness of Puerto Rico been so vividly captured as this take on the Hunter S. Thompson Classic. Debaucherous, sweaty and full of colour, The Rum Diary is the perfect snapshot of this captivating island.

5. The Motorcycle Diaries

This film is a story of two young men learning about the injustices of their homeland, and a biopic of the iconic Marxist guerrilla, Che Guevara. The scenery is just as captivating as the story and will have you daydreaming about South America for weeks.

4. Roman Holiday

The title of this film says it all. Shot on location in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Roman Holiday is a saccharine, shamelessly romantic homage to the Eternal City, and features the gorgeous Audrey Hepburn on a vesper.

3. Into the Wild

While the ending is a little bit morbid, this absolutely riveting adventure film is an extensive examination of youth, nature and the human connection and provides an unmatched look at some of the most incredible scenery the US has to offer.

2. Annie Hall

Nothing will make you pine for the big apple quite like a viewing of Woody Allen’s 70s masterpiece. Annie Hall features Diane Keaton in a tale that’s very New York, mixed in with liberal doses of psychoanalysis, existentialism and modernism.

1. Midnight in Paris

Many films have tried to capture the nostalgia and bohemia of Paris, and many have come close, but none have nailed it quite like Midnight in Paris. The sweet melancholy of the world’s most romantic city is on display in this undeniable masterwork.
