Radio star Kyle Sandilands has spoken emotionally about the terrifying crash that left his longtime chauffeur fighting for life after a head-on collision in Sydney’s eastern suburbs over the weekend.
On Monday morning’s Kyle & Jackie O Show on KIIS FM, Sandilands revealed that his driver, George Plassaras, was the man behind the wheel of a Mercedes that was struck by a $1 million Rolls-Royce in Rose Bay early Saturday.
“You may have seen over the weekend, it was all over the news – a head-on collision in Rose Bay in Sydney with a Rolls-Royce and a Mercedes,” Sandilands said. “Well, that was my driver, George.”
The crash occurred about 3.30am on New South Head Road. The Tiffany Blue Rolls-Royce, allegedly driven by a 23-year-old woman, collided with Mr Plassaras, 52, leaving him with catastrophic injuries.
According to Sandilands, his driver suffered a broken spine, multiple broken ribs, shattered hips and femurs, a ruptured spleen and diaphragm and a torn-open abdomen. The extent of the injuries shocked even the seasoned broadcaster.
“This poor bloke – trapped in the van for an hour, cut out of the wreck – and what did he do? He asked the ambo for his phone to make sure I was alright for the week,” Sandilands said. “He’s the greatest employee ever.”
Photos from the crash site showed debris scattered across the road, with both high-end vehicles severely damaged.
NSW Police confirmed Mr Plassaras was treated at the scene and transported to St Vincent’s Hospital in a stable condition.
The 23-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Rolls-Royce was not physically injured. However, police allege she failed a roadside breath test before refusing to submit to a formal breath analysis at Waverley Police Station.
She was charged with driving offences including causing bodily harm by misconduct and failing to submit to breath analysis. She has been granted conditional bail and is set to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on August 15.
Mr Plassaras remains in hospital as he begins what is expected to be a long road to recovery.
