Australian motorcycling legend Troy Bayliss has been hospitalised with serious internal injuries following a crash, just weeks after returning to riding from a previous injury.

The 56-year-old three-time Superbike world champion shared the news via Instagram, posting a photo of his battered body and revealing that he was found unconscious at the scene.

“Went for a spin in the meat wagon yesterday,” Bayliss wrote. “Thanks to the people who spotted me having a sleep on the track. Seven ribs, punctured lung and collarbone, and just beat up.”

Bayliss had only recently recovered from a broken ankle and had been back on the bike for just two weeks before the latest incident. It’s unclear where the crash occurred, but he credited passersby for finding him and calling an ambulance.

The news has rocked the global motorcycling community, with current and former racers sending well wishes.

MotoGP race winner Cal Crutchlow commented: “Heal up mate and you be back to still getting after it again soon!!! Legend.”

Max Biaggi wrote: “F***! Can’t believe!!!! Be strong my friend.”

Marco Melandri added: “Damn!!!! Take care mate!”

Aussie stuntman Robbie Maddison said: “Damn it mate! Sorry it was your turn. Heal fast brother!”

And young Aussie Moto3 star Joel Kelso said: “S*** mate! Get well soon!!”

Bayliss remains one of Australia’s greatest motorcycle exports, with three Superbike World Championship titles to his name across a storied career. He famously capped off his 2006 season with a fairytale MotoGP win, stepping in as a last-minute replacement and taking victory in the final race.

His son Oli Bayliss is continuing the family legacy, currently competing in the British Supersport Championship.

Bayliss has not yet provided an update on his recovery timeline, but fans and fellow racers alike are hoping the Aussie icon will bounce back once again.
