A shopper has questioned ALDI’s returns policy after she was told she could not take back $100 worth of food products to the supermarket.
The woman shared her complaints on the Aldi Mums Facebook page, saying that she had purchased a large amount of chocolate at the supermarket as “a potential gift idea” for her co-workers.
“The project fell through so I tried to return the chocolate but was told ‘our policy is not to take chocolate back, because it may have been tampered with’,” she wrote.
She slammed the response as “ludicrous” as the food items were still unopened in their original packaging.
“The bars are individually wrapped, AND sealed in plastic,” she wrote. “And if ‘potentially been tampered with’ is an arguable reason to deny a return, why isn’t that used for every single food product? What do you guys think, is this policy fair?”
Some users believed the supermarket should receive the return. “If you have the receipt you should be able to return it,” one commented.
Others disagreed, saying they would not want to get food items that had been bought by someone else.
“To be honest I wouldn’t want to be buy [sic] returned chocolate personally,” one wrote, while another added, “They would have had to waste all the returned chocolate, they couldn’t risk selling it to another customer.”
ALDI’s returns policy page stated it is “okay” for customers to change their mind.
“We will immediately refund or replace any everyday grocery item you are not entirely satisfied with. Please provide your original receipt (or other proof of purchase),” the retailer stated.
Woolworths said it will “cheerfully” refund shoppers who change their mind and return their purchase “unopened, in its original packaging and with clear proof of purchase”.
