A new type of home build that promises cheaper energy bills and the perfect temperature all year-around could be the hottest up-and-coming trend to hit the market in quite some time.
Also known as “passive homes”, these amazing eco-friendly properties apparently ensure energy savings of up to a huge 90% with a clever design system in place.
The mighty homes can be heated with nothing but a hair dryer in 20 minutes flat. The theory is that with the home being so tiny and airtight, household items such as a hair dryer or oven are enough to keep rooms warm during a chilly winter.
A four-bedroom family home in Toowoomba, QLD, recently sold for $630,000 and is understood to be the third ever passive home in Australia to go under the hammer. There are reportedly only 52 registered passive homes in the country – but with claims of savings like these, that number is surely set to rise.
Built to German standards, passive homes are 150 times more airtight than your typical home; since they are built with a thick layer of insulation in the walls and floors, and use double-glazed glass for all windows and glass doors, just the right amount of hot or cool air is allowed in and out.
Occupying just 327-square-metres, the Queensland home that sold recently contains two bathrooms, a two-car garage and a modern kitchen with stone benchtops and a breakfast bar.
